The Warden's Aircraft Tie-Down Rope Calculator

Estimate securement recommendations based on your aircraft's exact tie-down geometry (3D), MTOW category, ramp anchor layout, knot selection, extra rope allowance, desired aircraft position relative to anchors, and snubber use (if applicable). Calculator uses a three-dimensional Pythagorean model for its first-order calculations. Recommendations include target tension ranges for tying each rope.

How to Use the Calculator

Select your aircraft type. Choose "Custom" to manually enter your aircraft's tie-down geometry and MTOW.
Select the ground anchor layout used on your ramp. The first number is the distance (ft) between the two wing-ground-anchors and the second number is the distance (ft) from the tail-ground-anchor to the midpoint between the two wing-ground-anchors.

Select the knot used at the wing/tail rings. Knot allowance includes 4-6 inches of tail. Need help tying it? Watch knot instruction videos

Optional added rope allowance for tail ends, easier tying, or personal preference.
Adds 10 inches of rope allowance for 3 turns around the EPDM snubber or extra safety/slack line for traditional snubber.
Amount of longitudinal distance that the wing-tie-down-rings are positioned aft of the wing-ground-anchors. The 0" default is when wing-tie-down-rings are longitudinally aligned with the wing-ground-anchors (i.e. neither forward or aft of each other when looking from the wingtip). Some pilots prefer to position their wing-tie-down-rings "12 to 36 inches aft" of the wing-ground-anchors to create a slight "forward-pulling" tension on the wing ropes.
