Tier 1: Standard
MTOW: under 3,000 lbs
For aircraft rated under 3,000 lb MTOW, the recommended tie-down system begins with 1/2" premium double-braided nylon rope and wheel chocks.
Do you know the exact size and lengths of tie-down rope needed to properly secure your aircraft? How about rope tension guidance so that your ropes aren't tied too tight or too loose? Use our free tie-down rope calculator and get your results now!
Tie-Down Guidance
RampWarden uses aircraft maximum takeoff weight as a first-order starting point for tie-down system guidance. The calculator then helps refine rope length based on aircraft geometry, ramp anchor layout, knot allowance, and extra margin.
For aircraft rated under 3,000 lb MTOW, the recommended tie-down system begins with 1/2" premium double-braided nylon rope and wheel chocks.
For aircraft rated between 3,001 and 6,000 lb MTOW, the recommended tie-down system generally begins with 5/8" premium double-braided nylon rope and wheel chocks. In some cases, heavier restraint guidance may be appropriate.
For aircraft rated between 6,001 and 12,500 lb MTOW, RampWarden generally points toward heavier-duty restraint systems, such as premium polyester webbing straps with ratchet hardware and wheel chocks.
Note: These tiers are educational starting points. Final tie-down decisions should account for aircraft guidance, ramp conditions, anchor condition, rope or strap condition, wind exposure, knots, geometry, and pilot judgment.
